Rainbow Garden
South Petherton Hospital, Somerset.
This glass and light artwork has been created to delight patients and staff by casting a coloured light rainbow into the architectural space with sunlight.
Antique glass disks in beautiful rainbow colours and screen printed mirror flowers are combined so the artwork has a strong presence during both day and night. The flowers depicted all grow in the nearby East Lambrook Manor Gardens designed by Margery Fish.
Like the natural scene around the hospital, the artwork will be ever changing and accentuate and alter as the sky scene beyond it changes. At night the colours disappear and a blanket of shimmering flowers is framed by the night sky. The flowers reflect the light and movement from below, to give a twinkling effect.
This artwork was created with incredible support from Bronwen Gwillim, NHS Somerset PCT, Laing O’Rourke and the design team, Mike Werkmeister of East Lambrook Manor Gardens and Proto Studios. Sincere thanks to you all.
